About the Subject
Baseball artwork / print:
Austin, TX native Willie Wells (dec.) was a Negro League shortstop in
the 1920’s, 1930’s & early 1940’s. In 1929 with the St. Louis Stars
he batted .368 with a league record 27 HRs. Wells led the Stars to 3
league titles & played in 8 All-Star Games. Career batting average
of .334 in Negro League play & .392 in exhibitions against white
major league teams. National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1997.
Honored by the Texas State Cemetery in 2004.
